Some of the younger people today are fond of celebrating the arrival of a newborn baby by getting the child’s name tattooed onto their bodies. For those with somewhat older-fashioned sensibilities, jewelry will do nicely, thank you. The birth of a child, traditionally, doesn’t call for a gaudy diamond ring – although “birth-day” presents have recently become chic in certain circles – but rather for a modest pendant bearing the name of the newest member of the family.
Such namesake pendants bear a slight resemblance to the “dog tags” given to soldiers by the U.S. military. They’re not exactly frilly, but then, it’s the thought that counts. Not all birth necklaces are emblazoned with the name. Some are adorned with hearts, or with the image of a tree, or with the appropriate birthstone. What they all have in common is the price tag, usually in the neighborhood of a hundred dollars (a very small gesture of appreciation by a man whose wife has just gone through pregnancy and childbirth).
Personalized name bracelets, too, are a popular gift for new moms. Festooned with gemstones or birthstones, the bracelets can also include charms (usually geometric shapes, such as cubes, made of sterling silver) that spell out the baby’s name. Others, given to the female heads of larger households, may have a number of disc-shaped charms on which the names of each of the children can be etched.
Lockets and watches are also popular items, as they are easily personalized with Mom’s or Baby’s name, just like pendants. Giving a new mom a gift of jewelry gives her a symbol of the bond that she feels with her newborn – not that maternal instinct needs any reminders – and also crystallizes the memory of the event that includes the husband (who is generally responsible for such gifting) in the blessed event. Really, it’s the least he can do.
